SOMALIA: Al Shabab fighters flee from Qansah Dhere town as gov’t forces advance



Baidoa: The fighters of the militant group Al Shabab have vacated from Qansah Dhere town of Somalia’s southern region of Baay on Thursday after government forces started to advance, residents and regional officials told RBC Radio.


The militant fighters using pick-up vehicles vacated from the town early on Thursday and the town fall for no administration, but government forces backed by the African Union led mission [AMISOM] were ready to advance toward the town.
Residents who wanted to remain anonymous for security grounds confirmed tat Al Shabab’s fighters and its district officials including foreigners left the town toward Dinsor town, which is another district now under the group’s control.
“We have no any idea abiut their return but this morning they have completely fled here.  Nobody is controlling the town today” one resident said.
Qansah Dhere is one of the only two districts in Baay region under Al Shabab control, Baay governor Mohamud Aden Hosow said.
Mr Hosow confirmed that the Ethiopian forces under the AMISOM mission accompanied by Somali security forces were planning to reach the town and secure it.
Al Shabab which has been loosing many or the urban towns in the south and central regions of Somalia did not speak on its motive to vacate this strategic town in the Baay region where many of its fighters were trained and has been used as safe haven for the foreigners battling under the group’s banner.
